In the home corner, wearing their traditional red, are 20 times league champions and three-time European champions Manchester United.
Current discontent at Old Trafford is expected to surface ahead of, and during Monday’s match. The Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United has gotten off to worrying start, forcing the club to scour the transfer market for last minute additions. A 2-1 home defeat to Brighton and a 4-0 capitulation away at Brentford was not the start that ten Hag, or the Stretford End faithful had expected.
Those two losses, and a goal difference of -5 makes it Manchester United’s worst ever start to a Premier League campaign, and has seen their odds for relegation plummet from 2500/1 to just 25/1 with bet365 seeing over 500 bets on such an outcome since the heavy defeat against Brentford.
bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “It’s hardly been a steady ship recently, but the thought of Manchester United plying their trade in the second tier for the first time since 1974 seemed a long way from our odds compilers’ minds when they chalked up 2500/1 in pre-season.
“We were into 1000/1 come kick-off time against Brighton and then 500/1 by full-time after Erik ten Hag tasted defeat in his first game at Old Trafford.
“Customers were then quick to gobble up further fancy prices and we’ve had to take decisive action since the debacle at Brentford with the odds for the drop tumbling down to just 25/1.”
It’s no shock at all then to see that the hosts go into this clash as underdogs. United are best price 17/4 with bet365.
The main man from last season, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been granted permission to seek a transfer away from Manchester and looked worryingly frustrated at Brentford last weekend. However, if there’s one thing we know about CR7, is that he’s a man for the biggest occasions. You can back him at 13/2 to open the scoring and 2/1 to bag anytime. Could this be the match that he not only reinvigorates United’s season but his career at the club?
In the away corner, wearing their changed strip, are 19 times league champions and six-time European champions Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp will be without summer signing Darwin Núñez for the trip to Manchester after the Uruguayan striker was inexplicably sent off in Monday night’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. Núñez, brought into the starting eleven with both Firmino and Jota injured, saw red for a headbutt on Palace defender Joachim Andersen.
That draw saw was Liverpool’s second in two matches, following a frustrating opening day stalemate at newly promoted Fulham.
The timing of the match at Old Trafford will be seen as a positive by Klopp. The Reds haven’t lost in the Premier League there since March 2018 and have won 5-0 and 4-2 on their last two visits.
With the attacking options for Liverpool now severely limited, even more, pressure will fall on the shoulders of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz. Salah is no stranger to this responsibility though, especially against Monday’s opponents. The Egyptian star has scored nine times in his career against United, including five alone last season. Salah is 4/1 to open the scoring and 6/5 to score anytime.
Luis Diaz proved that his end to last season was no fluke with a brilliant goal against palace to cap an impressive performance. The Colombian wide man should relish the battle with a fragile Man Utd defence, and could exploit the lack of pace behind Maguire, Varane and co. Diaz is a slightly bigger 6/1 to open the scoring and 15/8 to score anytime.
All odds correct at time of writing.
